Independence Day in the Philippines

The Philippines, a group of islands in the Pacific Ocean, was discovered by European voyagers and eventually was colonized by Spain. The country was named in honor of King Philip II of Spain. The Philippines remained under the colonial rule of Spain until 1898 when Spain gave control of the region to the U.S. as part of the agreed end of the Spanish-American War. The Philippines gained its independence from Spain on June 12, 1898, and this day is celebrated as Independence Day.

History of Independence Day in the Philippines

Even though the Philippines got its independence in 1898, the United States government still considered it a U.S. colony. On July 4, 1946, by the treaty of Manila, the United States relinquished its hold over the country and recognized the independent Republic of the Philippines.

Independence was declared in the town of Kawit, south of the capital Manila. The Philippine flag was unfurled, and the national anthem was played for the first time on Philippine soil. The “Act of the Declaration of Independence” was written by Ambrosio Rianzares Bautista in Spanish, and it had 98 signatories.

Originally July 4 was the day designated to celebrate the country’s independence; however, due to nationalist sentiments and advice of historians, Independence Day was moved to June 12, the day it gained independence from Spain.

Philippines’ Independence Day Traditions, Customs, and Activities

Araw ng Kalayaan (the Philippine term for “Independence Day”) is a public holiday in the Philippines, and it is celebrated with grandeur and colors. The country celebrates the day with great fervor, and parades are the main part of the celebration with the president presiding over the parade by the armed forces.

It is estimated that nearly 11 million Filipinos live overseas, especially concentrated in the United States. Therefore, the Independence Day celebrations spill over to other countries as well. A parade is organized in New York City and other parts of the northeast United States. Special parades are also organized by Filipinos in other countries like the United Kingdom.
